Freedman Town

Marker Erected:  1996

Location:  Corner of Jackson Avenue and ML King

  Location Directions:  From the stop light at the intersection of Jackson Avenue and Highway 6, travel east on Jackson Avenue until you reach the intersection of ML King Street one block before the Square.  The marker will be on the left side of the road.  Click here for a map.

Inscription:  Freedman Town:  After the Civil War, many freedmen from Lafayette County moved into Oxford; settled in the area bounded by Jackson Avenue, Price Street, the railroad, and 9th Street; bought land, built houses, schools, and churches; and exercised the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.  the residents named their neighborhood Freedman Town.
